Respite

Parents For Community Living provides respite at two different sites - one for adults and one for children.

PCL's Adult Respite home is located on Evelyn Cres. in Kitchener. The home supports 2 adults on a permanent basis and 6 adults each weekend, Friday - Sunday. This home was opened in the summer of 2007 with an Open House to celebrate the opening held on October 21, 2007.

PCL's Children's Respite is located on Malabar Drive in Waterloo. This is home to 2 children on a permanent basis and 4 children for respite. The home was opened in the spring of 2006, with an open house being held in September, 2006.

What is Respite?

Respite provides care for developmentally challenged individuals who still live with their families. It provides the individual with a change of scenery in a loving environment and gives the caregivers a short break from the 24-hour care that they give. Respite keeps families living together longer.

We provide respite for over 100 families yearly and many more need our help! Many of the children that are on service resolution are not able to be supported anywhere else in the region.

Messages From Our Respite Families

Those 2 weeks in the summer gave me a good break to get rested up as I get very stressed and tired since my son needs constant supervision.

PCL provided a safe and secure environment and cared for my son without involving me during the break.

I, as a single parent, need the respite to help live a normal life. It helps me to get myself back from being stressed and worn out and allows me to have a bit of a social life with adults.
