HistoryFrom Dreams to Reality
Conceived by a group of visionary parents of developmentally challenged individuals, Parents For Community Living was incorporated in 1989 as a non-profit charitable organization. | | 1986 | The first gathering of parents to seek out how to best meet the challenges of providing for their adult children when they would be along in the world. | | 1988 | With financial support from local businesses, individuals and the Catholic community, the parents purchased and opened the first home for three men on Blueridge Avenue in Kitchener. Today, four men reside in the home. | | 1992 | With support from the Ministry of Housing and the Ministry of Community and Social Services, PCL opened a second home for four people on Crimson Crescent in Waterloo. At the same time, MCSS provided similar financial support for Blueridge Avenue. | | 1993 | A Supported Independent Living (SIL) apartment program for two men opened on Queen's Boulevard in Kitchener. | | 1997 | A SIL apartment opened for two ladies. With operating funds provided by MCSS, a home for five adults opened on Stanwood Drive in Waterloo. | | 1998 | PCL hired a Managing Director and an Executive Director to provide supervision and leadership to the growing organization. | | 1999 | Summer respite services were offered to individuals on the wait list. | | 2001 | A home opened on Westvale Drive in Waterloo as an Enhanced Supported Independent Living program for four ladies. Respite support services grew to meet the increasing demand for families in the Waterloo Region in need of a break. | | 2002 | PCL partnered with a retirement residence in Kitchener to provide out-of-home respite services to the community. This fully accessible facility allowed PCL to provide weekend and week day respite to many families within the Waterloo region. | | 2003 | A home opened on Pastern Trail in Waterloo for three young men. Annualized funding was provided by MCSS for PCL's respite program. PCL relocated its children's respite program to a home in Breslau. | | 2004 | A new home for four men opened in Kitchener on Westheights Drive as an Enhanced Supported Independent Living program with operating funds provided by MCSS. PCL received additional funding from MCSS to expand its adult respite program. | | 2006 | A new home was purchased for children on Malabar Drive in Waterloo. This home provides 2 permanent beds for children as well as 4 respite beds. Annualized funds were provided for children's respite which made it possible to open this home. | | 2007 | Another new respite home was purchased on Evelyn Drive in Kitchener for adults. In July, 2 permanent residents moved in and there are 6 beds for respite. Through donations from the KW Community Foundation, Harry Foster Foundation, an estate and MCSS this home was made possible. |
